horrible Jul 15, 2010 DO NOT BUY! I could not give this less than a one star and still make a point.
DO NOT BUY!. It is AWFUL. I used clumping litter--the good stuff, not the economy stuff. It does not pick up the clumps. The spray to keep it from sticking does nothing. The comb frequently gets STUCK and the prongs have bent, so the machine jams. It doesn't seem to notice that the cat half the time, so it does not cycle as it should. The smell that greets you at the door after ONE day at work clearly denotes that this thing is overpriced and under quality. I am going back to the the Litter Maid. Sometimes you can't do better.
What a waste of money.
POS Jul 13, 2010 I don't overfill the box and I use clumping litter, and yet, I still have to clean the thing the old-fashion way. I would not recommend this product!
I should have bought this sooner Jun 08, 2010 I have had cats all my life and I have two right now. I have always had the traditional old litter box that needs changing. I have been looking at these for a couple years. My daughter bought this type of litter box and she hasn't complained so I decided it's time to make my life easier. So I shopped and read reviews for a couple months.
Setting the box up was not simple, but not hard. Once set up, about 10 minutes, I plugged it in and filled it. That was it. I left the old box in place for a couple days and the cats didn't use the new one, so I went for it. I threw the old one outside. The cats immediately started using this new one. I was fascinated by how the stuff clumps and deposits in the closed in compartment. Every morning I empty it in the trash bag and scoop out the little left over pieces, which I think will clump better when I find a better clumping litter. That process takes about 1 minute.
My cats are big so I don't use the ramp, but that is a good idea. I don't know what this issue is with the waste "catapulting". The unit goes too slow for it to fly. I do have the issue with the stuff being pushed over the edge and ending up on the floor occasionally, but I use a dust pan and brush. It's a hard solid piece. Also, a couple times I found some clumps buried. The rake finds what is on top so if the cat buries it, the rake doesn't find it. But every day I use a scooper and check for buried stuff.
It's not perfect, but I really like it. No stinky litter box. No buying litter and liners and cleaning out dirty, germy, smelly boxes. In comparison to the method I have used all my life, this is much cleaner, and even with a couple little glitches, I give this five stars.
Don't waste your money on this automatic cat litter box May 06, 2010 Our eight year old LitterMaid model LM900 automatic cat box finally failed and needed to be replaced. There were a few minor things we disliked about the LitterMaid so we decided to try the less expensive Smart Scoop even though some of the reviews were less than complimentary. I thought perhaps they simply weren't using the Smart Scoop correctly. We should have paid more attention to those reviews.
To begin with, there is no way to activate a test cycle. In order to see the unit function you need to activate the unit by waving your hand in front of the sensor then waiting for ten to fifteen minutes to see it operate. I consider this a major shortcoming to begin with. But there's more, much more.
When in operation, the unit does indeed propel stools out, and onto the floor! Often!
Also, unlike the LitterMaid, the rake remains down in the sand at the end of the cycle. And if the cat uses that end of the box, then the rake is entombed in a large ball of clumped sand. It must be removed manually - which is probably why they give you a special tool with grooves in it to scrape off the rake with.
The waste container seems to be smaller that the LitterMaid's. We only have one small cat but the waste container was typically overfilled in less than a day.
These problems were evident in the first few days use but we decided to keep using the Smart Scoop long enough to really give it a fair try. After a month we decided to accept the fact that we had wasted out money and ordered a replacement LitterMaid. While waiting for it to arrive, we have unplugged the Smart Scoop, removed the rake, and are simply using it as an ordinary cat box - A VERY EXPENSIVE ORDINARY CAT BOX!!
Smartscoop litter box May 02, 2010 A great improvement over our old Litter Maid, we were on our 3rd Littermaid in 6 months when we ran across the SmartScoop while searching Amazon for a replacement. Like being able to use plastic grocery bags to collect the refuse in, does not need to use special containers like the Littermaid requires.
