Works flawlessly, stinks to high heaven Jul 30, 2010 Mechanically works great -- have never had a jam in about 3 months of use. The cats took to it easily. Easy to change refills although they are a bit expensive. Best to buy in bulk from the web.
However, if you have a small enclosed space to place this product (like we do), my simple recommendation is, "don't". This litter box STINKS! We have 2 cats and change the refills (so new litter) every two weeks. No matter what we do, our house smells like a litter box. We're in the process of a) changing to a new type of litter box, or b) getting rid of the cats. Either way, we're getting rid of this litter box! The smell is that bad.
What a great product! Jul 25, 2010 We have two cats and I hate cleaning the litter box three or four times every day. I bought this self-cleaning box and for the first few weeks let the cats get used to the larger box by using their regular litter in a box lid that just fit the unplugged self-cleaning box. Once they were using that, I started adding some of the special litter and finally switched over to the self-cleaning box and the special litter and they love it and I do too. It is important to let them get used to it and the new litter or they won't use it.
Hate the litter box Jul 24, 2010 This turned out to be the biggest waste of money I've spent in a long time. If you use the metal permanent tray the urine doesn't get absorbed by the crystals and there is an overpowering smell of ammonia in my utility room. I have been undergoing surgery for cancer and have had relatives taking care of me and I suppose out of politeness they never mentioned this stupid litter box. Since I am now taking care of it myself I have discovered my stupidity in buying the darned thing. It's too late to send it back and besides that I don't believe UPS or USPS would let me put it in their delivery system.
Smells Jul 19, 2010 Loved the tray but I am allergic to the perfume of the litter and my condo smelled really badly of cat pee after 5 days which is way shorter than advertised. They have recently brought out some unperfumed litter, but I suspect the smell of cat pee would be even stronger. I might try it with clay based litter as the actual litter tray is awesome.
Great product so far! Jul 19, 2010 I recently purchased the "ultra" model on Amazon along with the forever litter tray and crystals. I haven't used the Forever litter tray yet (the Scoopfree Ultra came with one tray/crystals so I'm using that first.) The scoopfree ultra machine seems very sturdy and I'm very satisfied with my purchase so far. I really like the counter that keeps track of how many times the machine is used, at first I thought it was an unnecessary feature, but it really helps to know the cats are actually using it and when to replace the cartridge. I have two cats and at first they saw the machine and were scared of it. I mixed in some of their old litter and took away the old litter box completely and I'm happy to report they are both using it! I'm keeping the hood off for now, I'm concerned that they feel too intimidated if they are enclosed inside the box, I will put it back on in the future when they are more comfortable with the new machine. When my item was delivered, it was not sent in a shipping box with padding, only in the manufacture's box with a label slapped on. Needless to say the box was beaten and looked taped together when it arrived. In hindsight, I probably would recommend buying the box at a local pet store instead of online, luckily I've never had to return anything to amazon, but it seems like it would be a big hassle if the unit arrived broken or the cats decided not to use it.
Box works just as I had expected, no complaints (although it is kind of loud, but what do you expect?!) I'm very satisfied with this product.
