5littersweep Utlra a good buy  Sep 07, 2007
By K100 "K100"
I bought this on sale a year ago,in spite of its bad reviews. It is better than scooping any day. However, I had to re-engineer it so to speak, and I know that most people wouldn't do that with some doo-dad they are spending $$ on. I wanted it to work though. I had to put some small gauge chicken wire on the rake bend so it would get the smaller clumps up. so now it works fairly well at keeping the box clean. I only have to check it out once in awhile, add more litter as its taken out and its just better than the non-automated boxes, but there is still maintenance. the cat loves it. she loves watching it do its sweep too. I like being able to use plastic grocery bags in the waste receptacle too. also, one has to use something like lard(solid cooking fat) on the pan after sanitizing and before adding the new litter, this helps scooping for a few weeks during the month. cooking oil spray is good on the rakes.

1not so good for the long term....  Oct 27, 2007

I was originally impressed with this litter box - until it had been a few months and the arm/scoop kept getting stuck on nothing - it would just hit the side of the box, over and over (for hours if I didn't stop it manually - not fun at 2am!).... Petsmart took it back, and I decided to give it another shot, as I have tried several boxes, and desite its flaws, I still thought this one was pretty good. The second one has also lasted a few months, but now the arm/scoop falls off because its locking mechanism doesn't work. I am ready to try something different.... I just noticed that Petmate, the manufacturer, doesn't feature this product on their website anymore, and instead they have a "new" automated litter box - seems like we all agree that this one has got to go!

Yes, it's noisy, and yes it gets a little messy with loose litter, but I can use shopping bags instead of buying pricey poop container refills and it does the job. I hate that plastic dome you can buy to cover it. I just have a huge box covering it with a hole cut out so my cat can go in and out and litter doesn't scatter everywhere. I'm pleased with this product over all and I wish it wasn't discontinued.

5Petmate Littersweep Ultra  Jan 19, 2008

I have four cats. Two months ago I purchased two Petmate Littersweep Ultra automatic cat litter boxes and am completely satisfied with their performance. Adding cat litter to the litter box, and emptying the litter compartment when full, are both quick and easy. The litter compartment has a white plastic bag with an elastic edge, so removing a full bag, and inserting a new empty bag, are both simple processes. Replacement litter compartment bags come in boxes containing a dozen bags.

This design uses a scooping arm that rotates and dumps its contents into a litter receptacle box, which has a lid that automatically opens and closes. There is no detectable order from the cat litter dome nor the litter receptacle.

My cats had no problem acclimating to this high-tech automatic litter box versus their former old-style rectangular and open litter boxes. If you have been contemplating upgrading to an automated cat litter box, this one works well. I don't think that you will regret the investment.

1Good idea, but woefully executed  Dec 31, 2007
By Clark R. Hecker "Snowfire"
After having some problems with Littermaid products, I decided to give this one a try. With two cats, for the first four months, it was at least tolerable, and less likely to jam than the Littermaid boxes. However, the waste receptacle is ludicrously small, and fills up in just a couple of days; and the expensive plastic bags are not a good system for dealing with the waste, unless you like sending lots and lots of them to the landfill.

Then abruptly the mechanism which rotates the rake while sweeping toward the litter receptacle failed, rendering the unit inoperative. I understand that this problem is very common in this unit and its lower-priced version, the Litter Round-Up. Many users report failure in two mmonths or less, so I guess I did a bit better than they; but too bad. I may have to send the whole unit to the landfill and start over, and I think I am entitled to better reliability than this.
